Dear Landlord - Dream Homes

Not since the release of the Shorebirds record last year has there been rejoicing on a level comparable to the elation shown at JS-NYC HQ with the arrival of the Dear Landlord full-length. Comprised of half of the dear departed Twin Cities punk stalwarts Rivethead, along with a couple of Copyrights, Dear Landlord are one of the few bands that is just as good as their predecessors.

Above and beyond their previous bands, you can discern the Screeching Weasel influence pretty easily. No slow songs, no ballads and one cover. All pretty bad-ass. They have re-recorded Three To The Beach in a not altogether displeasing manner, but from where I'm sitting, it's better on the split with Chinese Telephones. Quibbling aside, Dream Homes is out today via the lovable Floridians of No Idea Records. If you don't already have it, you may purchase via this handy link.

Cory Branan and Jon Snodgrass split cd

Before I get off track, let me first say that this Cory Branan/Jon Snodgrass split record is something you should pickup immediately. Both Cory and Jon are great guys and ridiculously talented singer / songwriters and Virgil and the rest of the kids at Suburban Home should be lauded heavily for all the ridiculously great records they release on the regular.

That said, what the fuck is the deal with all this animal iconography lately?!!? I'm all for totems and/or spirit animals and thought those shirts were pretty funny last century when I used to tour, but really kids? Do we need a fucking ironic eagle or cobra on the cover? I would argue no. Vociferously.

Were Snodgrass and Branan not to be the artists on this little slab of delight, I would rain bile on it ad infinitum. Wonderfully, the songs more than make up for the exceedingly ridiculous artwork. There are a couple covers and three originals from each of the gents. I'd say Branan edges out Snodgrass by a hair, but it's damn close. I think it's really only the fact that Jon dropped a solo record recently that gives him the edge. All the songs are pretty top-notch, with Branan's Yeah, So what! topping the list. That boy is trouble, personally and professionally. I wouldn't introduce him to my girlfriend, but I'd travel a real long distance to see him (or Jon) play live.

Bizarrely, this is only available on vinyl and cassette. I guess wax cylinders were unavailable, but I would venture that there must be some digital approximation of this stuff to be had. Pick up the record here and find Snodgrass and Branan through the highlighted links.

Live: Patterson Hood and the Screwtopians with Will Johnson at Bowery Ballroom 6.24.9

The new Patterson Hood record Murdering Oscar and other love songs had been inching ever closer to the top of the pile before Traci at Thirty Tigers got in touch about seeing the show at Bowery. His first solo record Killers and Stars, dropped almost five years ago now, but Patterson always has a million songs in various stages of completion. Many of them have been recorded for the new record, but there are easily an equal number still gestating.

The Screwtopians are Patterson's solo band, featuring Neff and EZB from Drive By Truckers, Scott Danborn and Will Johnson from Centro-matic, with Mr. Dave Barbe filling out the line-up on bass. Look at that band and then tell me how the hell this show didn't sell better. I know I'm broke, but the economy can't be so bad that this show should have been so sparsely attended. The ignorance of New Yorkers never fails to astound me. Will opened up the evening with a short solo set, featuring a pretty great Husker cover, Danborn for a tune or two, and a tune with the Screwtopians to close the set. Will deserves to be very famous, very soon. We should all do everything we can to make that the case.

I had hoped for a seamless set, especially with The Screwtopians coming out for Will's last song, but it was not to be. They were out soon enough, working through some sound problems, but still pretty much killing it. You would do well to pick up a copy of the new record stat. It's got recorded versions of Heavy and Hanging and Back Of A Bible and some other newer fare. Even though I haven't reviewed it formally, you would be wise to buy it immediately via this handy link. Check out the tourdates here and get your friends to go see those Screwtopians. The show is far too good to be passed over in favor of the next spate of DBT shows.

Live: The Copyrights, The Unlovables, Dear Landlord & House Boat @ Fontana's 6.22.9

I had been saying for a couple weeks now that this show was the NYC show of the year (thus far) and now that it's done, you'd be hard-pressed to get me to say otherwise.

I showed up at Fontana's a couple songs into the House Boat set. Wonderfully enough, the listing of the bands was woefully inaccurate, listing The Copyrights as going on first, an eventuality that was rapidly rushing me towards apoplexy. I was pleased to find that someone was just an idiot. House Boat features the ubiquitous Mikey Erg on drums, along with Grath and Ace from the The Steinways. Zack Rivethead fills out the lineup on guitars and vocals. It's better on paper, at least at this juncture, but it was only their second show. Don't get me wrong, it was real good, but I think I'd like it a lot more with more time to marinate on the songs. There's evidently a record coming soon, recorded at Sonic Iguana with Luke from The Copyrights. Somebody would do well to hook a brother up. Hint, Hint.

Next up was Dear Landlord, who are simply awesome. Featuring half of The Copyrights and half of Rivethead (R.I.P), they have finally gotten around to recording a full-length that's coming out this Tuesday on No Idea. It is staggeringly awesome. Pick it up immediately. We got most, if not all of their canon and the room got real frisky real quick. Every song is a slice of some post-Weasel pop punk goodness that should be played as much as possible. See them live, buy their records, name your children and bands after them.

The Unlovables made one of their increasingly frequent live appearances next. They had a couple of new songs and sounded pretty great. Hallie has not gotten any less lovely, I will tell you, and the older songs still hold up nicely. The local kids were out in force and loving said Unlovables (aided and abetted by liberal amounts of Rolling Rock). They are an awesome time live and the Archers Of Loaf cover doesn't hurt one damn bit. Here's hoping we get some new stuff out quick, and some more live shows soon.

The Copyrights closed the evening in righteous fashion, churning out banger after banger that would make lesser bands hang it up stat. The well-lubricated crowd was chomping at the bit to see the Kings of Carbondale and the gents did not disappoint. If there is a better punk sing-a-long than Cashiers, I have yet to hear it. Luke didn't make it on this trip and Ronnie from The Arrivals has stepped into the breach to savage the drum kit, but that was the only thing close to disappointing. For the record, Ronnie was awesome, as was everything about their set.
How four of the best punk bands in America could play for $8 and not sell out is beyond me. I heard the next night in Brooklyn had a lot more bodies in the room, but there is no reason why a show this good shouldn't have been better attended. You punks need to get off your lazy asses.

Live: Bloodkin @ National Underground 6.19.9 (late)

So Traci at Thirty Tigers mentioned that Bloodkin were going to be in town and suggested I pop in. I really like the new Bloodkin record, Baby They Said We Would Rise Again. I had written it up for the final print issue of Skyscraper and they were playing in the neighborhood, so I double dipped and dropped in after the 1.6 Band reunion.

Barry has had good things to say about Monday's at NU. Evidently Kevn Kinney plays the pretty regularly and its a good time. On a Friday night upstairs, however, it's kind of a pain in the ass. Bloodkin kicked ass, but the constant traffic back and forth was pretty irritating for this cranky old bastard, and I wasn't playing. The gents are no spring chickens, and I'm sure have played much worse situations, but I felt for them. I saw the first set and would have stayed for the second had it not been like seeing a band in a hallway full of the finest Friday night douchebags the bridges and tunnels could provide. If you can see Bloodkin, you definitely should, though. The new record is great and the old stuff is pretty fabulous it's own self, very Athens, with a healthy dose of DBT, if you're into that kind of thing. Oh, I so am. Keep track of the fearsome fivesome that is Bloodkin here and get the new record Baby They Said We Would Rise Again here from the good folk of Sci-Fidelity. It's a banger.

Live: 1.6 Band reunion at Cake Shop 6.19.9

So it's another Friday night at JS-NYC HQ. I'm supposed to go check out Bloodkin at Union Underground late, but get a text from Eric about the 1.6 Band reunion show over at Cake Shop. Kids are in town, Jason Viteretti is on the island and it's right around the corner, so off I go.

All nostalgia aside, do we really need a 1.6 Band reunion? They were fun to see at ABC back in the day, and were all purported to be nice guys (when they were sober and/or clothed), but if anything, you would think a Beyond reunion would be the way to go. That said, everybody looked well, and the gents sounded great. There is evidently a new EP on the way (via Gern Blandsten, maybe) which will be interesting to hear. The new songs sound like the old ones, if that is an issue for you. Good times, good show, good people. The picture is old, obviously.

I'm not sure how active the band really can be with Kevin in Austin, but in the interim, you can keep track of all 1.6 Band goings-on via this handy link.

Live: Wussy @ Cake Shop 6.16.9

As the Avendon-ian snapshottery so eloquently evinces. Wussy were back in town, playing my new home away from home Cake Shop with Doug Gillard and Chris Brokaw. I like me some Wussy, and was pretty excited at the prospect of hearing them play some of the new stuff off their awesome new self-titled record.

I showed in time to catch a good part of Doug Gillard's set. He was playing in an ad-hoc duo format with his guitar player, as his rhythm section was called out of town, but still managed to wow the small crowd that turned up. He's got a new record out called Call From Restricted that I've not heard, but judging from the material he played, it sounds like it's pretty damn good.

Wussy were batting in the middle slot, which was more than fine with me. I enjoy Chris Brokaw in all of his incarnations, but it had been a couple weeks in a row where I had been out every night and I was looking forward to a quiet wind-down to the evening. Wussy have a new drummer, which was a mild bummer, but he seemed to have had no problems assimilating into the band's ranks, as Wussy set the place on fire. It seemed like the Ohio ex-pat community was out in force. The band seemed a little taken aback about the crowd being so enthusiastic on a school night, but were far from unappreciative, feeding off the crowd and giving it back tenfold.
The set list is pictured, although in retrospect I'm not sure how accurate it is. Regardless, suffice to say that the kids rocked. Lisa was in fine voice and as lovely to look at as always.
Chuck was his usual acerbic self, although I will admit to catching unnatural feelings being around that much of a big hunk of man. My issues aside, he and Lisa make for a fine rock and roll couple. Paired with rest of Wussy, they make for one heck of rock franchise. Think John and Exene if they came from Cincinatti rather than L.A. It's so good. You would do well to get off your duff and check them out the next time they pass through town.

Check out Wussy next time they come through your town, hopefully towards the end of the summer. You plan your schedule using this handy link. Buy the stellar new record Wussy here and thank me later.

Whiskey Trench

Hey Kids:

Was stalking the good folk of Whiskey Trench online, hoping that us kids South of the Border might get any of the axis of awesomeness that is/are The Sainte Catherines, Yesterday's Ring and/or Whiskey Trench and noticed that they pinched part of my review of the WT demo that If You Make It has up on their site. That's enough to warrant a re-mention from this asshole. Snag a copy of the Whiskey Trench demo here and harass those kids about getting down this way and playing some damn shows already.

Live: Canadian Rifle, Daylight Robbery, Fatal Erection @ Tommy's Tavern 6.15.9

Ah, Brooklyn and its punk rock. In my old age, it takes a lot for me to get on the bike and ride out into the wilds to see shows, especially on a school night, but I've been on a bit of a tear as of late. I really liked the Iron Chic demo, and as Get Bent seem to have gone the way of the Potboiler, it seemed prudent to dodge the storms of late spring and make it out to Tommy's, especially if there was a midnight curfew.

I rolled in around the 10 o'clock hour, just in time to catch the end of the Fatal Erection set. The three or four tracks I saw were pretty great. Female singer, and pretty abrasive in the Poison Idea end of things. Good stuff, especially as I understand this was one of their first shows. Check their webspace here and maybe snag one of their charmingly anachronistic cassette demos.

Daylight Robbery were next, although I had hoped that it would be Canadian Rifle. The presence of their exceedingly lovely bassist dashed those hopes for me, but the fellow Chicago three-piece sure did bring it. Vocals were a little sketchy (due to the sound guy, not the singers), but the kids sure did bring the Chicago/Naked Raygun noise in a sweet fashion. Check them out here. Looks like they are doing the whole tour with Canadian Rifle and that is not a bad thing at all.

Canadian Rifle stepped up next and proceeded to pretty much level the joint from where I was standing. They have dropped a couple demos in the last year or so that I know I have heard, but can't find at this point. If you like early Jawbreaker, Tin Armor and/or the aforementioned Raygun of much Naked-ness, you could do exceedingly worse than Canadian Rifle. Here's a link to some MP3s. Peep the tourdates and make it out if you can, the Canadian Rifle/Daylight Robbery one-two is pretty damn hard to beat.

Iron Chic closed the night. I would have liked to see them, but the sheer amount of dilly-dallying by them in between (and the flyer {pictured} that said they must be over by midnight) the CR set and their post-12am start time did not bode well for a long set that wouldn't be cut short, so back across the bridge to JS-NYC HQ I went. Hope it was good and that they get their shit together next time.

Live: Art Brut at Mercury Lounge 6.7.9

Ah, Art Brut. How I do love thee and how I miss throwing up outside your tourbus in bucolic Southern enviorns like I did last on a couple of occasions last year. In the absence of too much Newcastle, and with the advent of their stellar new record Art Brut vs. Satan and a five night stand at Mercury, it seemed prudent to take in a show and bask in the hangover nostalgia.

Save for interpersonal disappointments and some camera problems, it was a good night at Merc. Art Brut pretty much killed it. Again, the new record is pretty great and you should pick it up immediate-like. Any record that skewers hipster rock with lines like 'cool your warm jets, Brian Eno' is the type of snarky-laden British rock I want to hear. They are doing more multi-night residencies in metropolitan areas all around this great world of ours and will undoubtedly be back in NYC soon. Keep track of all their subversive goings-on here. Buy Art Brut vs. Satan here.

Live: Howard Tate and Lucero @ Snapple BBQ Fest 6.13.9

First off, let me point out that the rain stymied any attempt for me to get any pics, so both of these photos were boldly snagged off the interwebs from 33-13 (dot) com. Apologies to Jacob Blickenstaff for using his awesome pix without asking.

So there was rain, although really only for the last part of the Howard Tate set and most of Lucero. It gave the unwashed Lucero masses a chance to grab free showers and opened up the real estate rather nicely. Got a second with the exceedingly wonderful Goldberg-Paupeck dynamic duo (plus one) and caught the high points of the Howard Tate set. All the old hits were present and HT was in good voice. Add some overpriced BBQ and you've got a good way to prime the pump for Lucero.

The boys were good the night before, but afternoon shows for the gents can be a slippery slope, especially if Ben's been on the Jameson the night before. The rain (and some bad monitors) complicated things a bit, but all in all a pretty great set. I continue to have my issues with the ballcap contingent (especially those that roll ten deep with a beer bong) but they were almost offset by the new songs and the kid (Henry?) who came out and danced for a bit. Anyone see Junior Brown the next night?

Live: Lucero at Maxwells 6.12.9

Lucero on the heels of four Hold Steady shows in a damn row? I may very well be far too old for these things. The weather is nice(r) and it only makes a man think that it's a good idea to ride the bike to Hoboken and post up at Maxwells. The boys are still touring behind Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers, but they have a new record in the can and haven't been shy about playing the new material live. It sounds great, look out for a review of the new record as soon as I can cajole it out of the gents. No real surprises, save for Ben playing a bunch of the stuff from The Last Pale Light In The West as sort of a first encore, but pretty bad ass all around.

Alright kids:

Even I can't spout about the awesomeness of THS for four days straight. Ask me and I'll probably talk your ear off, but suffice too say that the set lists below will eliminate any ambiguity as/re: the awesomeness therein(at). Plus, kids pitting to Springsteen is a little odd. Thursday night also featured my enjoying the mighty aldenbarton beforehand. The gents do so bring it. Might I point out that if you were not there, you missed out in a pronounced fashion.

Night Two:

Save for the appearance of 212-MARGARITA, I'd say the boys played it a little safe for their first show back. Props are due for mixing up the set list, but it certainly bode well for a real barnburner this night. Met up with Dru aldenbarton and Eric Johnson for some pre-emptive beverages and sallied forth in high sprits.

Ok kids:

Sorry for the delay, but Daddy's been out purging demons for the last week or so. Here's what my OCD has been up to:

Personally, if you're going to go through some fucking drama, I'd have some Hold Steady shows to offset such ridiculousness. The universe doth provide, and four Hold Steady (plus two Lucero and an aldenbarton) shows were on the docket. Night one was decent, maybe 6.5 on a ten scale. Lots of great songs, maybe not in the best order, but beers were had and my inner 'that guy' was gotten in touch with. aldenbarton playing North Side Festival
